Gem Carvings by Gerd Dreher

Gerd Dreher is widely regarded as the most talented carver of gemstones to have ever lived. His works—exquisitely detailed, extremely realistic carvings of animals wrought from crystals of ruby, sapphire, citrine, amethyst, aquamarine, topaz, garnet, jasper and agate—are among the most highly sought after masterpieces of the lapidary arts.

Life in Stone, Gem Carvings by Gerd Dreher encompasses more than seventy of Dreher’s hardstone masterpieces created over the last five decades selected from private collections in North America, Europe and Asia. The exhibition represents a unique opportunity to view some of the finest masterworks ever produced by generations of artisans who have devoted their lives to the lapidary arts.

As Gerd Dreher apprenticed with his father gem carver Paul Dreher, Gerd’s son Patrick apprenticed with him, carrying the family tradition into the fifth generation. It is reassuring to know that the Dreher family gem carving tradition will continue well into the 21st century.

This exhibition was organized by the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Local support provided by The John P. McGovern Foundation.

Death by Natural Causes

Open until September 4th!

Snakes. Spiders. Sharks.  The things you fear are the least of your worries! Death by Natural Causes will introduce patrons to the range of “animal, vegetable and mineral” dangers that lurk in their everyday lives.  Through a collection of specimens, text and interactives, visitors can see what can cause a death, either directly or indirectly, from the natural world. Poisonous, venomous and toxic are just a few of the terms that will be clarified, and things you interact with almost daily will be used as examples—mushrooms, snakes, spiders and even common foods! Old wives tales and urban myths will be debunked, as visitors travel through five general areas of rich graphics, compelling visuals and surprising specimens.

The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes

Open now!

Museum visitors will learn how Sherlock Holmes, a scientific expert ahead of his time, used seemingly trivial observations of clues others missed to solve some of his era’s most mysterious crimes. His practices and techniques, created in the mind of doctor-turned-author Conan Doyle, changed the way police work was conducted and remain in practice today. The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes features original manuscripts and period artifacts, investigative tools influenced and used by Sherlock Holmes, and interactive crime-solving opportunities. Guests will be transported into Sherlock Holmes’ London to solve a crime in a world filled with innovation and experimentation–and just receiving its introduction to his ground-breaking methods.

“The Conan Doyle Estate can’t remember an undertaking as involved and exciting as this one,” says the Estate’s U.S. representative Jon Lellenberg: “Museum visitors will experience the scientific and literary ideas that inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to create Sherlock Holmes, and Holmes’ methods for investigating and solving crimes as the world’s first consulting detective, and they will visit their two worlds, including the very rooms in which all this took place.”

Authored By Chris Wells

Adventure is my middle name. Well… actually it’s French. Literally, it’s Christopher French Wells. But the spirit of adventure lives in me, and has always inspired me to go out and seek new experiences. I’ve traveled to Europe, Mexico and South America, as well as few places in the U.S. I’ve seen different places with different cultures, learned some things about humanity and about myself in particular. My goal is to lend my unique perspective, carved out of my own triumphs and tragedies, fears and fancies encountered during my years of college and international travel, to the other great voices of this blog. Hopefully to the enjoyment of our readers…
