Lecture – Intelligence Investigations – An Insider’s Look at High-Tech Sleuths by Dee Smith

How does intelligence investigation work in the real world? How do investigators piece together information to reveal evidence? How are new data sources–like open source intelligence, human intelligence, imagery intelligence, zero-based analysis and computer forensics–used in practice.

Intelligence expert Dee Smith, will give an insider’s perspective on the methods and practices of investigation and intelligence in both government and private arenas. Smith will include examples of actual cases he has led (no names, of course!) where intelligence findings have made a significant difference.

Gordon Dee Smith, founder and CEO of private intelligence agency Strategic Insight Group (SIG), has led intelligence projects for over $60 billion in investment transactions, has worked in over 90 countries around the world, has conducted projects for U.S. government agencies including the DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) and DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), and for many private clients. He has conducted investigations of thousands of individuals, companies, and situations.

Lecture – A World on the Brink: Why We Have Arrived at a Watershed Moment by Dee Smith

Why are we faced with such a sudden escalation of risk, a rapid decline of global order, and increasing social decohesion within countries around the world? Why has a world that seemed relatively stable in the recent past turned such a dark corner toward intensified anger, heightened tribalism, class and ethnic resentment, opposition to globalization, and rising conflict? Even the US and Western Europe, long seen by many as a bastion of stability, have increasingly become a source of risk.

Dee Smith is creator, executive producer, and host of the PBS/Real Vision Television documentary series “A World on the Brink” that examines these trends, their probable causes, and what they might mean regarding regions from the US and Western Europe to East Asia, Russia, the Middle East, and other areas. This evening at HMNS, he will discuss not just immediate causes, but will also explore some possible long-term sources of rising problems and possible future developments on a macro scale.

Gordon Dee Smith, CEO of Strategic Insight Group, is a specialist in intelligence, foreign policy, and global change. He works in the areas of transactional and investment intelligence, geopolitical and change risk analysis, and media and cultural production. As founder, principal, and CEO of the private intelligence agency Strategic Insight Group (SIG), he has led intelligence projects for over $60 billion in investment transactions, has worked in over 90 countries around the world, and has conducted investigations of thousands of individuals, companies, and situations.

Currently, he is Vice Chair of the Advisory Council of LLILAS/Benson Latin American Studies and Collections at the University of Texas at Austin. He is a permanent member of the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, a member of the Bretton Woods Committee in Washington, DC, immediate past president of the Dallas Committee on Foreign Relations, and a member of the advisory board of the Houston Committee on Foreign Relations. He is involved with many other policy and cultural organizations. He has also worked as an international venture capitalist active in Latin America and Europe, and before that, was a founder and president of InterCultura, an NGO that organized international cultural projects. His father’s collection of American Indian art and cultural artifacts, the Gordon W. Smith Native American Collection, is now part of the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

Adventure is my middle name. Well… actually it’s French. Literally, it’s Christopher French Wells. But the spirit of adventure lives in me, and has always inspired me to go out and seek new experiences. I’ve traveled to Europe, Mexico and South America, as well as few places in the U.S. I’ve seen different places with different cultures, learned some things about humanity and about myself in particular. My goal is to lend my unique perspective, carved out of my own triumphs and tragedies, fears and fancies encountered during my years of college and international travel, to the other great voices of this blog. Hopefully to the enjoyment of our readers…
