Corpse Flower Watch: Webcam!

July 9, 2010

Want to know what the corpse flower looks like *right now*? Wonder no more – you can join in the FunkWatch on our webcam! If you’re on Twitter, use the #corpseflower hashtag to join the conversation and see your tweets on the webcam page!

And – see what people are saying about Lois the Corpse Flower – and why she’s a must see! – in this this video from the Houston Chronicle!

Can’t see the video? Click here.

PC users: You need to have Windows Media Player to view our webcam video feed. (Download it here.) Firefox users: download this plugin. Mac users: we’re working on a solution for you; we’ll post again when we get it figured out. In the meantime, there is a converter plugin for Mac users available that you can try for free; get it here. If anyone tries it, let us know how it works in the comments!

UPDATE: There was an issue with the webcam feed on the night of Friday, July 9 due to an unintended change to our firewall. This issue is now fixed – thank you to everyone who let us know of the problem! If you experience any problems with the webcam going forward, please email or send a message to @hmns on Twitter.

Mac users: Unfortunately, due to the unexpected nature of this plant’s flowering, we had to go with the equipment we had on hand – which is, also very unfortunately, several years old and limited to Windows drivers. We have tested several options to convert the feed, but none have worked with our equipment so far. We are trying to find a workaround, but in the meantime, KRPC Ch. 2 also has a webcam with a live feed of the Corpse Flower, and you can access it here.

We are very sorry for any inconvenience or frustration this has caused. If you are still unable to view the webcam, we also have photos, blog posts and videos with regular updates on Lois’ status.

UPDATE 2: We are getting reports that the webcam does not function in Google Chrome. We recommend using Internet Explorer of Firefox (with the plugin linked above) for the best performance.

Will the museum be open later hours? I was really hoping to get to see it but I work this weekend and don’t get out until 7pm.

FOR Mac USERS: There are better options than WMV video but at this point it’s too late for the HMNS to do anything about it but there is a fix for that. Download and install the Flip4Mac Player which can be gotten at the link in the blog where it states “get it here”. I’ve been using it for years to view WMV files and it works just fine. Watching online gives you the opportunity to know when Lois’ bloom begins to open keeping you from getting there too soon and missing the real event. It’s what I’m doing.

  3. Erin F says:

Hi Bea! We have a private event tonight, but we are prepared to stay open late tomorrow night if there are lots of people who still want to get in to see Lois. Call 713-639-4629 to check before you come by.

Flip4Mac is working for me this morning. It was not last night, but it may have been just the firewall issue. I think HMNS is a leader in using online media to share their story so hopefully you can find some loose change in the couch cushions to upgrade some of the equipment.

  5. Erin F says:

I am *so* glad to hear Flip4Mac is working for you guys – thank you for your patience! Laurie, we will definitely be checking the couch cushions, under the desks, outturning pockets…:)

  6. Steve S says:

laanba, I thought Flip4Mac wasn’t working last night, too. Found out this morning that it was not Flip4Mac’s problem but HMNS was having a problem with the video feed.

  7. EdT. says:

I downloaded Flip4Mac this AM, and yep it worked for me as well. I do hope to pay Lois another personal visit, maybe later this afternoon.

Erin, don’t feel bad about having to use what you have on hand. Because, you guys are helping to “write the book” on this kind of stuff – and we have to start somewhere!

One last thing: last night I dreamed of a “@LoisTheCorpseFlower” account running around on Twitter, and still remember her first Tweet: “I. smell. dead people…
Oops, sorry, that’s just me! Color me embarrassed. #forgotmydeodorant” Now, if you can just find somebody to make a 4-foot tall model of this flower…

  8. EdT. says:

After playing around a bit with the Flip4Mac plugin on my Macbook (Snow Leopard, Safari 5), I discovered something interesting: in order to get movement, I have to use the “wheel scroll” feature of my Magic Mouse, which allows me to step forward and back through the frames. This might help to explain why some folks are saying they can’t see the stream, even though the plugin seems to load.

  9. me says:

can’t see live feed of the corpse flower 🙁 have a MAC and it is not streaming …

  10. me says:

works for MAC users on firefox …thanks for the info!!

  11. Saw the live webcam and it was great. That flower is awesome. Viewing from Fairhope AL.
